Hello, I am performing the calculations for radial opening in spherical shell or formed head section of ASME VIII Div 2 (4.5.10) per the 2015 edition. My question is regarding the equation in Step 10 for Pmax2 (Eq 4.5.148) the equation states:

Pmax2=2s(t/Rxs)

When I look at the Nomenclature for this section I only find a capital "S" and the equation given has a lowercase. Is it supposed to be S for the allowable stress for the vessel according to design temperature? Or does this lowercase s mean another value?

I also looked at the 2013 edition and both editions have the equation the exact same way with the lowercase s.

If anyone can share some input as to whether I am right to assume it as capital S or not would be great. Thanks!

You are correct that it should be capital "S". It appears that it was inadvertently changed back in the 2011 Edition (it was correct in the 2007 through 2010 Editions/Addenda).

Please advise the Code Committee of this error (which should be managed with an Errata), using the procedure in the Code - in the 2015 Edition it is found on page xxii. -
Under the Inquiries input on the webpage, inform that you have found a typographical issue in that equation. Inform them that the "error" appears first in the 2011 Edition.

Thank you very much TGS4. I have submitted the inquiry through the link you posted.

Thank you very much, too. And welcome to eng-tips!

The ASME Codes are a community/group effort, that requires the participation of every member of the community. All of the work of the Code Committee members is volunteer (the people working for a paycheck have their companies volunteer their time and pay for their travel expenses; the retired people volunteer their own time, as well as travel expenses). Small actions like what Emily0929 did is exactly how we should all operate.

Emily0929 - would you please share the tracking number provided to you by the ASME online system. And when it gets fixed (either in an errata or in the next Edition) you can be proud that your contribution made a difference.

The record number they gave me in order to follow the status of my inquiry is 16-608.
