assembly symmetry 1

insert part (spring)
insert new part (empty..named plane)
assembly symmetry
select plane from part named plane
selected "mirror new instance"
select finish

Tree shows "symmetry of xxxxxx"

problem is there is nothing there but symmetry plane
no mirrored spring instance..what am I doing wrong?

Tools - options - infrastructure - part infrastructure - general - restrict external selection to published elements.

A symmetry is linked back to the original model.
You have 2 choices here. Publish all data you want linked in symmetry command or turn this option off, run the symmetry command. turn option back on.

Is the spring part a solid? Symmetry in assembly seems not to work with parts that are not solid. It goes through the motions and nothing is created.

hey guys
part infrastructure whether on or of did'nt make a difference
the spring would sym opp as a part just fine
but I coud'nt get it to work in assembly.
does the assembly symmetry only work on the whole product(entire assembly) vs an instance within the assembly?

BTW...
The spring was created in GSD..(helix using a profile)
then close surface and then two rib commands to finish out the hook ends.Thanks for the reply's they are appreciated

Carl, I am sorry, I assumed you were on => R17. The rule is >= R17 you can assembly symmetry any geometry/solids. The options for this are in the Assembly Symmetry menu. If you are =< R16 you can only symmetry Partbody OR External View surfaces. That command is found in GSD (Generative Shape Design) - Tools - External View.

Another solution for assembly sym in R16:

1) insert a new CATProduct into your existing Assembly

2) Perform a symmetry to this empty CATProduct (after this step you should see a Sym of...CATProduct in your tree)

3) Copy all CATParts,CATProducts,Components you want sym. into the ORIGINAL EMPTY CATProduct you created.

4) All items will showup under the Sym of...CATProduct

5) You can now drill down your tree into Sym of CATProduct...new CATProd... and see the list of items you copied into the original asm. If you copy them out of this location and paste them into the top level of your asm they will remain sym items.

Hope this helps and I didn't confuse anyone.

WARNING: All symmetry items are linked to the original CATPart they originated from. Meaning if you "open in new window" a part that has been asm symmetried the part will show up as non-sym version. The Sym only exists in the CATProduct it was created in. Be careful not to link drawing views to these sym parts, they will project as there non-sym versions.
