If you can help me solve this problem I will name my pet chinchilla after you.

I am incorporating a similar locking mechanism to that found in an automatic opening umbrella that unlocks with push of button, the catch is that I need a umbrella in which the push button is in the same line of travel as the collapsing shaft - in other words I need a automatic opening umbrella operated by push button located on the bottom of the handle - not the side as shown in the attached picture.

dvd - thank you I will be able to complete a functional prototype, however it would be great to have a similar mechanism (see quick video demonstration "Link" and picture) that's not $25 a pop and could be viably mass manufactured. Any recommendations?

If you cannot extrapolate from the quick release pin to what you need, then I probably can't help you.

Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel?

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)
