I have a situation where I would like to consider using a standard F & D head in place of an ASME F & D head in a non-code vessel application. I have some internal and external loading that needs to be considered but I am struggling with how to use the formulae for a knuckle radius other than 6% (ASME F & D head), which appears to be required to use formula UG-32(e).

Can you guide me to the proper formula to use for calculating loads on a standard F & D head?

Equations for alternative knuckle and dome radii are in Appx 1 of ASME VIII.

But notice the alternative design in App. 1 is based on maximum L/r corresponding to a standard 6% ASME head as limited by UG-32(j). The non-code heads can have radius as small as the plate thickness or 2", varying with suppliers, and don't fall into the design range.

Did Appendix 1 of ASME VIII have what you were looking for?
