I'm sitting in a pub now looking at the structure above me, with joists and electrical and mechanical fully exposed in all their glory. Some of it looks like hell; and it's considered "cool" now, not just by me, but by lots of peeps. Not so long ago, the standard architectural aesthetic, at least in my world, was to have all of this concealed from view. The photos towards the top of this thread show the structure totally concealed from view, which is pretty standard today, and, well..... this thread.... I'm looking forward to see how this changes, as I am sure it will; and Berkeley may lead the way.

maybe they should require that the underside of the balcony must not have any finishes. Would make inspections a lot easier.
