bending column rebars

If you have a moment resisting concrete frame in both directions is it mandatory that rebars from middle columns are bent into the longitudinal beam (X direction)?

I am asking this because you can only bent colum bars in one direction - either frame in X direction or frame in Y direction.
Is it better to bent column bars in X direction so we have a moment resisting frame in X direction (second image) and bent down beams bars to column for frames in Y direction?

You raise an interesting question... My initial reaction, is that it would be nice to have the bars frame into the beam, and you may want to extend them into the beam with the maximum moment.

There's a really good chance that the column doesn't care where the bars terminate as long as they are properly developed. I'll put together a quick sketch about bar placement that may reduce some of the congestion.

Much of what was discussed here recently will also apply to this problem. The detail that I posted at the end could easily be adapted to this situation.

If you decide to go with the long bent bars, the ones forming the corner joint would probably warrant priority as those are more demanding joints.

Beam portal... Hooks should be drawn to correct radii so that you know where the bars really are. In addition, by truncating the bars, the assembly is less dependent on the tolerances of the form. Hate it when the fixed length (H2E) bar is 1/2" shorter than the out to out of the formwork, and both could be within tolerance. In addition, you save a couple of pounds of reinforcing...


Should have added... it allows a little wiggle room in the event there are conflicts with column reinf or beam reinf at right angles.

Kootk - I saw the sketch you posted in other thread. Do I get it right - you didnt bent any column rebars -they are straight and terminate at the top?

That is correct. They're lapped with U-bars though.
