What is a good budget number per ton for HVAC systems in new schools in Texas and the deep south?

Depends on the system and what you want in it.

I know I'm a structural guy, but, I have worked for a GC/CM and a Cost Estimator/Program Manager and supervised/coordinated MEP work. HVACR is a little hobby of mine, (sometimes I need a break from structural stuff)

I Checked My RSMeans SF Costs 2005...

Schools and Colleges seems to average about $10/sf for HVAC

Looks like they are basing their numbers on 260sf/Ton

Hence a 10,000 sf system would cost $100,000 based on 260sf/Ton. This would be approx. $2600/Ton

Figuring your system would be designed based on 225sf/Ton I would extrapolate 260/225 = 1.15. This would give you $2,990/Ton.

Adjusting for 2009 costs assuming 3% per year gives 1.03^4=1.12. However, regional factors for Texas appear to have a cost multiplyer of 0.70 to 0.80. (Basically a wash)

Hence, I would say use $3000/Ton for a Single Zone System. And use $4,500/Ton for a Multizone System.

Does anyone have any better numbers.

$1,500-$2,00 ton installed for a modular chilled water plant if you go to one of the packaged central plant vendors. This is a good budgetary number.

That get's you chillers, pumps, cooling towers, controls, all of the interconnecting piping, between these items, enclosure etc.

Doesn't cover air handlers or piping inside the school, piping to and from the chilled water plant.
