Does anybody have experience with storage tanks for Pentane Rich Gasoline? I have to evaluate existing fuel oil # 2 storage tank 30,000 barrels capacity for possible use to store Pentane Rich Gasoline. Existing tank has floating roof and vent to atm between floating roof and stationary roof.
Are there any special roles and regulations for lighter fractions? MSDS list this gasoline as “extremely flammable, vapors form flammable or explosive mixtures with air at room temperature.” Does it mean I need nitrogen blanket to 30,000-barrel tank? Any references to API, ASME or any other authority?
I will appreciate any help.

A nitrogen blanket is appropriate for any flammable liquid with light ends. API 2000 provides sizing information. Search the threads for nitrogen blankets.

Paul Ostand published a blanet guide. Look for it at

The nitrogen capacity might be about 30000 scfh for a 30000 barrel tank. Which do you prefer, nitrogen or air to mix with your gasoline vapors? Nothing about 30000 scfh surprises me as I just did a project like that last year - for alcohol.

Certainly it is prudent to blanket a tank containing flammables. However, just like your auto's tank, it may not be necessary because the vapor inside the tank becomes too rich to support combustion. That's how they can put potentially sparking components (Fuel pumps, level senders) INSIDE an automobile fuel tank.

When pumping gasoline out from a 30000 barrel storage tank it is inbreathing air unless blanketed by nitrogen. As the tank level becomes low the volume of air is potentially high. One of my favorite refinery explosions was an empty storage tank. It makes for a good story recalled from my junior high school days.

The previous posts are directing you correctly. Use API 2000 or contact an expert for assistance.

This is a critical application and needs to be done correctly.
