Hello,

I am trying to find info on any restrictions for voltage, current, energy/joules, etc. that can be used or discharged in various mining operations, probably for safety reasons. I am sure there are limitations as to arc intensity allowed that would affect the equipment available to use to DC or AC cable hipot test and fault locate with thumpers. Anybody? Thanks.

In stripping (open pit) and UG ore mines the energy release from a thumper does not matter and a good deal of energy is needed to find a cable fault in MV cables with resistance grounded systems.
In coal mines with the potential for methane gas it could be an issue but I don't believe that I saw anything in the MSHA regulations on this. Of course, prudent measures are warranted. At one time the OSHA research group was helpful so I would try to reach out to them.
