Can a camera familiar person help me optimize wires from a MIPI Image sensor?

Page 5 of this datasheet has a nice list of outputs from a remote module camera sensor that seems very well suited for my project. However, I will have to wire necessary wires to a slip ring to make this work with continuous rotation.

For that reason I need to determine how many of these 24 contacts are going to be essential and how many I can skip or combine (Pins 6,9,12, & 15 (GND) for example I would guess I can combine to one). Also, I wonder if some of the feeds are streaming at different resolutions, so if I just picked one (1080p) could I skip wiring the others?

I came here hoping someone more familiar with this sort of tech could help me sort that out. Thanks in advance for any help!

You could probably hardwire the reset and powerdown pins. Digital grounds could probably be combined, possibly two analog power pins into one. Diff pairs will need to remain as is. Looks like removing about 6 connections is the best you can do, unless you want to go the route of combining the data traffic into one serialized line, but that will require some processing on both sides of the slipring.

This is not really a camera problem; this is an electronic design problem. You should be talking to your EEs. The maximum data rate according to the datasheet is 1.2 Gbps PER LANE, so skimping on signal grounds is a potential noise minefield. Frankly, I think they've already minimized the number of I/Os this device needs and uses. While the shield grounds look seemingly superfluous, they are integral to the noise performance of the device.

Okay. It is what it is- if I need to use a 24 wire slip ring then so be it. Thanks for the feedback.
 
Thanks! Sorry for the delayed reply here, evidently I don't get notifications via email anymore? Anyway, I drifted back here to read up on an alternative idea I had- I could possibly use wifi in lieu of a slip ring in this module, although I would just put a wifi receiver where the slip ring was going to be- so it would transmit a video signal maybe an inch. Seems like a waste of capability but it would get the job done and simplify things. So far I haven't found a better short distance transmission method, but I'm also reading up on some projects where folks are achieving adequate data rates via visible LED light, so I might try something like that. I wonder if there is something akin to a media converter for open air LED's rather than fiber.
 
You do realize you are asking for 4.8 Gbps over wifi, right? Note that Ethernet is not a real-time, deterministic system at the level of the bit.

Again, I suggest you find yourself an EE.

I'm not asking for 4.8Gbps- I'm feeling out what I can get. If I have to compromise and save some video locally and send a very low bandwith feed out, that's a possibility.
 
Expect <50Mbps of real data out for 100M Ethernet. You could potentially get your 4.8Gbps out of 802.11ac, but you'll need numerous transceivers for that, and the power draw would be significant.

No, there's no requirement- it just means I have to adapt the system to match what is possible. I'd be content with VGA if that's the best I can do, or I'd be even more content with 4k video if that were possible. The former just means that I'd definitely move onto a plan of saving HD video locally to a card while transmitting low-res video.

Right now I'm just exploring the idea of eliminating the slip ring (or reducing it to just 1-2 contacts for power) in favor of short-range wireless data transmission of some sort, so hijacking my original topic/title a bit.
