Hey Guys,

So I am working on a canopy that is tilted up, and it got me thinking, can you easily have hot-rolled steel flanges bent? Like angles or channels for example? IS this difficult for anyone?

Thank you!

It is difficult if you don't have the equipment or ability!

Many fabricators have equipment and experience to bend almost any hot-rolled section, about both strong and weak axis. Need to be check of min radii to avid 'wrinkling' if the thickness is thin.

I don't think the flange thickness would be an issue for bending. I think it would be an issue for fitting and securing the shape into bending equipment. Typically, it is setup to bend plates that don't have other pieces projecting from them and the plates are cut from a much larger plate. At least one edge of the shape would need to be secured in the jig. There's not much material to grab onto on an angle.

They have some calculators on their webpage that can help you determine what's feasible, and they also do a pretty quick job on returning quotes.

Years ago it was about $0.5/lb to roll sections and you need to be cognizant of which sections roll well.

If your talking about bending the beam flanges to match your roof slope I think its going to be easier to just put a bent plate on top of the wide flange.

Or rotate the beam to be perpendicular to the roof slope. It may add a few stability or strength checks, depending on the bracing conditions, but it doesn't require adding any components.
