Have just ordered a new Dell M6440, from a shop as opposed to direct from Dell, saved almost a 1000, so worth it only down side is the machine comes with Vista as standard, so I have 2 options try and install catia over vista or delete Vista and install XP Pro, as on the old laptop.

Firstly I appreciate that the M6440 is not yet supported, that the M4400 is the highest supported machine. But what I would really like to know is has anyone installed catia on Vista with any success? Are there any issues / bugbears?

Any help would be appreciated as teh new toy arrives tomorrow and as with all gadget freaks want to be using it straight away.

R19 is Vista supported, so there should not be much of an issue, R18 SP7 I think is Vista ready as well.

R19 has support for offline licensing.

Dbezaire,

Thanks for that the only downside to that is the auto project I am working on is R16, so all the machines are on 16, think we have one copy of 18 running on one of the desk tops, but is purely due to one of the tooling companies using 18.

Am assuming from your post that 16 will then not be supported, but can it be installed?

Some hackers on the state that it can be done. I dont really follow what they have to say as we run legit software and supported platforms. The M6440 is an impressive machine and it's unfortunate that you had to take Vista.
Can you downgrade the laptop to XP64? That would be the best solution.
You will have to get a nodelock license from your Business Partner to use that laptop off the network unless you install R19 and check the license out. Then use any version of Catia.

Derek

Derek,

I will have a look at the other forum, although suspect that it will work differently as the copies of catia that they were using in China installed completely differently. To be fair much more easily.

Have had a chat with the company I am working for, am running one of their nodelocked lics on the current laptop, not used XP64 though is it the same as normal just faster? Also and excuse the numpty question but does it not require a different processor? Do I need them to get a copy of 64 bit catia? Or do you as posted elsewhere on the forum run 32 bit catia on the 64bit machine?

Thanks,
Mark

Windsurf and all,
I'm running into a similar problem. I'm trying to load Catia v5 r18 onto my laptop that has Vista 64.
She's not letting me do it! A window pops up that "...loading 32-bit... in Vista 64 is forbidden..."
Any help is greatly appreciated... trying to use it for personal training.

I just checked the mountain of install CDs.
R16 - 64bit AIX(IBM Unix) Only.
R17 64bit Windows.
R18 SP6 or 7 is Vista.
R19 Vista with offline license capabilities.

so, if you want to use your fancy new laptop, looks like you would need a dual boot option to run 32bit XP Pro.

Regards,
Derek

Thanks DBezaire,
When you said that R18 is Vista... I'm assuming that it's 32-bit Vista? I looked at doing the dual-option... hate the idea of putting more money into it...
Thanks for your valuable input!

Derek,

Thanks for all the help yesterday, I think I will have a go at installing it on Vista, if it does not work straight away will just put XP 32 bit on it.

One question I did have was if I run 64 OS and 32 catia, does that mean I can put in more than 4Gb of memory and use the majority of it with the OS leaving a full 4 for catia, or would the extra memeory cause catia problems? And would it do it automatically or need lots of programming to work?

Thanks,
Mark

32bit CATIA on X64 will enable CATIA to access the full 4gb of addressable space dictated by its 32bit-ness. you may have to apply ms patch KB911021 (see program directory) to enable it to access more than 2gb

I don't think you can run 32bit Catia on 64bit OS, the code is compiled for each platform.
If you run 32bit XP, enable the 3GB switch in the OS boot.ini file. There is tonnes of info on that subject, just search for 3GB. That will enable 3gb for applications and the other gb for OS and other programs.
On 32bit OS 4GB is the max that it will recognize.

New machine just arrived and is booting up as I write this, very fancy shmancy, there is nothing like having new laptops to make you think you will work faster.

Will let you all know how the install attempt goes

I have had no problems running 32-bit CATIA on a 64-bit system. However, the only real valid point in using 32-bit CATIA when you can go for the 64-bit version would be if you're trying to install add-ons to CATIA that require a 32-bit environment.

Regarding R16: We had R16 running on XP64 systems with no more problems than normally.
