Orbiting a small yellow star
Our glorious new ruling party is about to enshrine a 43% reduction in CO2 by 2030. They are also, in a fit of not joined up thinking, intend to increase the population by 4% in the same time frame, by immigration. They'd also like to see more tourists.

I suggest by 2027 the entire target net zero project will have been repeatedly demonstrated to be effectively impossible, and of course meaningless, so it's time to get the beer and popcorn out.

Cheers

How about Tons per capita... and I don't know if it's Tonnes [pipe]

As far as a climate scientist goes, there may not be a moniker for it, but there is lots of scientific information that strongly indicates that something is going on... Just hold on to your hats, folks. It could get a lot more interesting... we'll see how the Bureau of Reclamation deals with Lake Mead; I think the deadline is today.

Thanks, Tug.. I've updated the spreadsheet to reflect that.

Nope. You, in Canadialand, buy an alumin(i)um bolt that was made in China from Australian bauxite and coal.

Your CO2 'cost' for that is zero.

Australia's CO2 cost for that whatever it is to dig the stuff out the ground and ship it.

China pays the full CO2 cost less Australia's bit, for that bolt, yet YOU are the person using it. Why doesn't it show up in your CO2 footprint?

A large part of the west's decarbonizing efforts to date have consisted of moving manufacturing elsewhere, and so are able to enjoy the product without having to account for the CO2 generated in the manufacture of that product.

Your spreadsheet is a political document, not a meaningful one.

Yup... life's a b*tch... that will likely change in the near future. [pipe]

I rewrote it

Once upon a time a mythical country called Australialand had high CO2 emissions, and in particular made aluminium pots out of locally acquired coal and bauxite. Oh the emissions were high. Sadness was in the people of the land (some of them anyway).

The politicians decreed that henceforth they would get rid of the nasty aluminium pots and pans business, thereby reducing the CO2 emissions.

So instead Chinaland (a country of low CO2 emissions per capita) bought the coal and bauxite from Australialand, and burned the coal, and made aluminium, and made pots, which they then sold back to Australialand's unemployed people.

So, net result is more CO2 is emitted, and Australialand has lost an industry. But Austrialand's per capita CO2 emissions had reduced.

The Greens saw the results of their policies and declared that it was good. There was much rejoicing by the people of the land (well, some of them).

Yep. So much of these supposed CO2 "cuts" in developed nations are nothing but the offshoring of industry to China. When it finally catches up with us that we can't do anything anymore we're in so much trouble.

Part 2

In response to charges of hypocrisy the government of Australialand decreed that exports of coal would cease. Chinaland imported coal from Indonesialand instead, and since this is poor quality coal, CO2 emissions increased. Australialand loses another industry.

Part 3

The Awkward Squad points out that Australialand is the beneficiary of the pots and pans it uses, and so is responsible for the CO2 used in making them. Net result is that Australialand is now down two industries, paying more for its pots and pans, and globally CO2 emissions have increased.

Part 4

The UN high commission for fixing every single problem that has ever existed announces that Australialand has to pay them for all the CO2 ever emitted by Australialand's use of pots and pans since 1880, in order to hire dancing girls, Mercedes Benz, and Mumm's champagne compensate for past injustices. The citizens of Australialand slowly realise that somebody is having a laugh.

In a Chinese sense, this can get way more interesting... [pipe]

yes, banks are excellent at sniffing out money making opportunities.

In that case you'd think they would be an "equal opportunity" lender, instead of, uhh, discriminating on the basis of motive power...

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Bank Australia is tiny as banks go, and this is a just a marketing tool, but big banks are also sniffing out the opportunities of catering to the green market. Some won't loan money for mining activity.

I suspect that the mainstream bank "organ" is "green" pure, whilst they have a "seedy" BTS "organ" that'd lend money to the mob if there was profit in it.
