client want us design the closed drain piping above ground also the collecting closed drain tank is above ground.
I have few question as i have not done any above ground closed drain system

1.Do we need to run the header pipe on rack
2. All the drain pipes to be routed above ground to pipe rack

We need a whole lot more information. For example: Fluid being drained, what type of facility installation is it (a new 20 story Trump Tower or a tiki bar in South Africa).

Even a closed drain is still a drain, I.e. it still uses gravity to flow in the final section.

So an above ground tank makes no sense.

Is client an idiot?

I saw that a closed drain system is to collect the liquid to a drain sump. And then, use a sump pump to clear the drain to the above ground staorage tank.

I will post a snap shot of PID

Harron08,

Thanks for the P&ID, however the picture is unreadable and really needs the file attached as well.

But in the main a P&ID isn't really what is needed here as it is a schematic. What we need is a section or piping drawing with elevations.

Basically unless you can run all the drain piping with a slope or head difference between the bottom of the pipe and the top of the tank, liquid won't flow up under gravity.

So if e.g. ALL you piping or drain connections are up on a rack and your tank on the ground then it might be ok. But as soon as any drain connection goes below the top of the tank, the item or pipe in question won't drain.

The PID picture is not readable ..But apparently (i estimate just looking to the picture) the client wants to save energy ..The collection tank above ground..That is, the drain points above the top level of collection tank can be collected and drained with gravity,( the header may run on the pipe rack ), and the drain points on ground level can be collected to a lift station with underground gravity drainage piping and lifted to drain tank.
