I have several used carbon steel tanks. I request information and options for coating the interior of the tanks for storage of oily wastewater prior to treatment.

The tanks have been cleaned and have a light to moderate covering of corrosion on the interior. I want to eliminate the addition of metals to the wastewater do to discharge requirements.

The tanks are 8' dia x 16' long with capacity of 6400 gallons. I intend to do the work...but need guidance on procedure and product...confined space entry is no problem.

What are my options?

Comeback with more information as oily wastewater is too generic.

Information as to Ph.
What type oils?
Will the oil/water separate.
Anything else that you think of.

unclesyd,

The pH of the oily water ranges from 5 to 9.

The temp range will be from 30 to 90 degree F.

The oily water is generated from oil water separators used in auto shops and from the recycling of used oil generated from auto shops and other small businesses. Typically the oily water will separate in a oil water separator. There may be a trace of Ethylene glycol or other anti-freeze.

I think I am looking for a product which can be applied with a roller. Open to options.

My paint buddy is on vacation in Hawaii so I don’t have any specific recommendations.

You need to use a “Novolac Epoxy Based Paint”. There are quite a few people who make a variety of these coatings that would applicable in your case..
You can ask your local paint supplier about the Novolac Epoxies and if he hesitates look somewhere else, so get you a good paint man. There are one or two of the Novolac Epoxy floor paints that have excellent solvent resistance so keep asking.
You may have to use a wash primer over the rust.
Here are 2 of many people that supply the Novolac Epoxy paints.

Just follow all the vessel entry rules and remember a rusty tank can kill you.
