Hi Guys

We choose between columns and shear walls based on the design of resisting lateral load system, but is there any dimension that distinguish between the two of them)according to aci318),
I heard from my friend in work that when the length over width is more than 4 (then you can take it as shear wall),but to me I don't buy this, I believe i can take column as shear wall although W=L if i decide it should resit shear wall(part of shear wall resisting system for earthquake)?

So what is Right??

Does a column have concetrated and distributed reinforcement ?

Not sure I follow what is the problem here ?

According to ACI 318-14 Section 2.3, a shear wall is a vertical element with a 'horizontal length-to-thickness ratio greater than 3.

A good structural engineer is often a blessing for others.
