Commissioning - To Utilize Temporary Strainer mesh on Duplex Basket Strainers

I have pump suction piping system ( 5 Pumps ) with 16" duplex strainers for effluent water transportation. The line is successfully installed and piping is air blown, hydrotested and getting ready for commissioning. For commissioning what type of strainers is the most preferred. If temporary conical strainers are used, to clean the debris collected strainer spool need to be removed along with bolts and gaskets which is time consuming. So it is suggested to use temporary strainer mesh ( Fabricated to match strainer basket)on duplex strainer. Advantage of using duplex strainers with temporary mesh requires less efforts, since basket can be cleaned by diverting the flow through other chamber of strainer and inactive strainer compartment can be cleaned by removing the basket by opening the quick opening door of the strainer ( Sealing of the basket quick open door is by using O-ring).

Thanks in advance for your expert opinions.

I don't quite understand your question.

If yoy have Duplex strainers, why are you not using them with the same filters that you would use in operation?

If your filter size is required at a certain size for the pumps then why would you want to use anything different during commissioning?

You are correct - the temporary commissioning strainers are a pain to remove a lot of the time.

My usual issues are that no one thinks of that or has the right instrumentation to monitor DP across then.

Depending on your suction pressure, the max allowable DP on such strainers is often quite low. Just use the Duplex strainers with the normal filters. Why would you do anything else?

Hi LittleInch,

Thanks for your feedback its more informative.

Temporary commissioning strainers are used by suppliers. They're useful for voiding warranties but that's about it. If you can ensure proper cleanliness of the piping and your permanent strainers are correctly sized for your system you don't need the temporary strainers. If you can prove to your supplier that you've adequately cleaned the piping they shouldn't require you install the temporary strainers.
