Can realistic compression set tests at 25% deflection be carried out on thin sections of molded elastomers, EPDM in particular. The sections in question are approx 2mm thick with a tolerance of 0.1mm. Layering or building up to thicker sample is not being used. If such testing is valid how would the results compare with nromal sample thickness (12.7mm).

Any comments welcomed, particulary any experience or knowledge of such tests.

Thank you

It will take better tooling that is often used for such testing. Tool steel plates, ground flat, and precision ground shims for limiting compression.
As with any such test the reported values will be relitive to the original, just ratios.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

pg11 Our experiences are that it is totally impossible to co-relate compression tests on different thicknesses of rubber, not even with a dimension change of only twice thickness, and you want to step from2 mm up to 12 mm.!! Cheers CM

I didn't mean to infer that the results could be related.
You will have a test and you will set standards for that test. It will be different from the large scale standard tests.

You will need to develop the test. Run a lot of samples at different compressions and temperatures and times. You will need to know that you are operating in a stable region of properties.
