We have a new product from a manufacturer who claims they can provide a wireless interface to any existing transmitter in the field.
The wireless transmitter they provide is Ex i, powered by batteries, and it will provide 2-wire (4-20 mA signal, 24 VDC power) to local Ex d transmitters.
My question : Is this setup safe for use in a hazardous area?

aaliwa,

An Exd enclosure is explosion proof, meaning that if the contents set off an explosion, it will be contain within. If your transmitter is located inside, any explosions it sets off will be contained. I am familiar with Exp, which is monitored and pressurized with non-explosive gas. I have not found anything on Exi, although I did not try very hard.

If the application requires Exd, either your transmitter goes inside, or it complies with Exd or Exp.
