Hi all,

I am looking for Canada specific standards or publications that might apply to recommended operating distances or damage thresholds for structures with respect to construction vibrations.

I have the older NRCC papers and I don't see any CSA standards that would apply but perhaps there are other national or provincial guidelines. I am also familiar with the Toronto bylaws on the subject.

The 1969 Ferahian paper for example states the following: "In Canada the velocity corresponding to the threshold of damage is taken at three inches per second". He references the 1963 Northwood paper and goes on to discuss lower thresholds.

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest that you obtain two textbooks...

"Construction Vibrations" by Charles Dowding
and, if you can find a copy,
"Vibration of Soils and Foundations" by J.F. Richart or Richart, Hall and Woods

Joseph Bowles book on Foundation Design has some info, but not a lot.

CalTrans has some good vibration info as well, including limits for structural damage. The info can be downloaded from the CalTrans website.

Most codes; with the exception of some of the transportation construction standards, do not limit vibrations. Some of the transportation construction standards (such as for installation of sheet piling near buildings and other structures) will give limits for vibration and will require monitoring during construction to prevent damage to adjacent structures. The Florida Department of Transportation has such a standard. I have attached a copy of the relevant section from the FDOT standards...

US Bureau of Mines has a standard that relates vibration to building distress. I don't have it but used to. City of Mpls did some vibration studies of different pieces of equipement back in the early 90's.
