Hi All,

I have a situation where I am designing a slab-on-grade which will have large steel container dumpsters stored on it. These are the large dumpsters that are mounted on the back of trucks and used by recycling and garbage companies. The containers are on steel wheels which are 11" wide and will roll across the slab as they are slid off the truck. Can anyone give me some guidance on how to calculate the contact area for this type of wheel?

Thanks!

I haven't had a chance yet to visit the job site but I am told that the old existing 6" un-reinforced slab did not hold up to well. I don't know that the dumpsters were all to blame; however, since there was also talk of some sort of fire years ago. The details are very sketchy and it sounds like the slab is very old. I am told that the dumpsters will be full at times and that the weight could be as high as 60,0000 pounds.

Thanks JAE! I'll run through the numbers and double check the equations. I'll let you know if I see anything wrong.

What I notice from the spreadsheet is that to hit the 'acceptable' level the load needs to be 138 lbs... I think the 'unyielding' formulation is too far from being practical in this case. The slab will have local issues due to such an impact, and armoring for the possible damage seems like the only route.

I think that a 1/2" steel plate laid over a 1" reinforced elastomeric mat in the unloading area, all inset into the concrete, will pay enormous dividends both in terms of slab surface durability, and for that matter, neighbor relations.

Cheers
