Hi All

Need a bit of help or feedback.

Just started work in sulphur transport setup from ship to stockpile via conveyors.

In the past, the conveyor (belt) material use was anti static type.
However, in recent times, I found that fire resistant anti static (FRAS) belt replaced the Anti Static belt.
No documentation -explanation on why this was done. I assumed some thought it was a good idea.
The FRAS belt don’t last as long as the AS. I am thinking of reverting back to AS.
So any opinion or feedback appreciated.
We have a fire suppression system along the belt.

Have you figured out why the belt is not lasting? Is it because the top cover wears (presumably from the caustic material)? Or is the bottom cover wearing (as it passes over the drive rollers)? Was the correct thickness of cover (top and bottom) chosen - because there are many "fire resistant" belts that are also anti static, and not all are equal. Or is the inner material (skim rubber and/or textiles) failing - presumably from lack of thickness or improper material choice.

Same questions hold true for a purely anti static system, by the way.

1. FRAS generally wears more than other grades, and
The following states that maximum abrasion loss of FRAS is 250 mm3 compared to say K of 200 mm3.

2. I propose a qualified person evaluates, and a Management of Change/risk assessment is completed, considering: hazards, and obligations e.g. due diligence, insurance, and specifications.

An example of a specification, that may be considered due diligence, follows:

Conveyor belting and conveyor accessories used at an underground coal mine or in a reclaim tunnel at a coal mine are to be FRAS.

Assuming that the wear is a cover wear issue. I wrote a spreadsheet based on cover life equations. You are welcome to use it - understand if you don't, I am always hesitant to open excel files on this site.

Thanks all for the feedback. Thx DVD for that spreadsheet.
