I am looking for a cost effective solution for a small amount of remote IO (aprox 12 IO) at each of about 16 locations. The furthest remote IO location will be about 3500 feet from the master control point. The locations are out doors, and interconnecting wiring needs to be direct buried. Power for the remote IO equipment will be 110 VAC, which will need to be run in parallel with the remote IO fieldbus. The remote IO is slow to change, so response time need not be very fast. Wireless is not an option due to metal structures in the area that would interfere with the RF signals.

Will appreciate any recommendations that you would have, and/or experiences (pro or con) with any of the various fieldbus for remote IO.

Hello;
Genius I/O is not RS485. It is 32.5KHz manchester encoded signal. Very similiar to Profibus-PA or Fieldbus-H1 without the 24 volts dc on it.
Also I would not recommend using Genius I/O. The technology is very old, and there are very few debuging tools available.

Burkert (manufacturer) and Wago (reseller) offer a FB unit that provides 8x DIN and 4x DO, under FF H1 or Profibus PA. That means they are bus-powered at 16mA, with a minimum of 17V . I have to say, it's not clear from their literature what the current demand is per point.
Moore Industries offer a remote I.O package that will do what you need here, but it is MODBUS rather than fieldbus.
Since you've specified that 120Vac power can be made available locally, I can't see what the problem is - there must be a ton of remote I/O solutions available for you.
