That looks like a steel yard which would match the story regarding their cargo.

I think if you look closely, the wake indicates that the ship was in reverse from the start of that particular video, as indicated by the churn in the wake on the sides of the stern.

I think you are right. They were already at, say, 1/4 throttle in reverse given the short run-up and the obvious need to turn around. Then at 0:07 they go full throttle when they realize they won't stop short of the bridge. You can see that the length of the churn almost triples starting at 0:07.

Just another day at the lake.

I don't think that the rudder is that effective under those conditions. ie: coasting forward with engines astern.
On the other hand, bow thrusters will allow them to both turn and brake. I guess that they didn't have bow thrusters. grin

There is a brief view of Yongho Pier in this older amateur video which the ship was pulling away from and where it subsequently hit the yacht according to this story. You can see the approach spans in the background where it struck.

Edit:
A view across the incident area from another of the same users videos.

And here is a video showing the real time tracking of the ships in the bay at the time of the incident. It was linked on the ship tracking page @byrdj posted.

Wonder what the name of the ship's pilot is? Maybe we should ask KTVU San Fran. I hear they have sources for pilot names. [smile]

What is that little blue triangle on the video? A small boat or a tug?

Captain of Russian cargo ship that crashed into Busan's Gwangan Bridge taken into custody

[blue]A 6,000-ton Russian cargo ship that crashed into a bilevel bridge in the South Korean port city of Busan last Thursday was in communication with local marine traffic control, according to the city's maritime police.

The latest findings indicate the captain, or possibly other crewmembers of the Seagrand vessel, were in contact with traffic control, contradicting earlier claims the captain of the ship could not respond to radio signals because he did not speak English.

The captain of the ship was also drunk at the time of the crash, according to local news service Newsis.

Busan maritime police said Monday the Russian vessel was in correspondence with traffic control before and after the crash.

When the ship was asked whether it was leaving Yongho Pier it replied "yes," and asked for a tugboat. The Seagrand then confirmed it had collided with the Midas Yacht, and would be returning to port. But minutes later, the ship denied the collision and asks for two tugboats to tow it out to sea.

Communication was subsequently lost, during which time the Seagrand crashed into the bi-level Gwangan Bridge.

Seven minutes after the crash, the ship again reached out to traffic control, reporting it would be dangerous to anchor the vessel.

The captain was intoxicated while steering the ship, according to reports.[/blue]

Just a little dent is all. No harm no foul.

It looks like the KCG vessel. It shows up after the first impact with the yacht, then circles the Seagrand frantically, and then follows the SeaGrand out to a mooring location after the second incident.

I can just hear Rodney Dangerfield shouting "you scratched my anchor!"

Great "dashcam" footage though in that link from epoxybot.

Typical Russian.

That will buff right out.

It appears he caught the end of a dock and twisted it around. Then he must have stopped long enough for one of the sailboats to move out of the way because the video skips and then it's gone from the picture.

Here is a longer "Dash Cam" video with the bridge crash.
