Creating concept sections from an a surface model

Hi,
New to v5 and I'm struggling to create concept and feasibility sections from an a surface model. How to cut a section through the surface, then add geometry to create a concept. Have tried the intersect command, but it takes about 10 mins to cut the a surface! Have tried sketcher, but I don't want a sketch linked to the surface - I just want to make a section similar to the way you do it in v4!Am I asking too much of this wonderful system? I am sure I am not the only one struggling with this..........any help much appreciated. Thanks

Trimboy - turn off the Create datum icon by double picking it. Now your geometry will not be linked. If you are creating a sketch, do not pick the surface - create a plane instead (again with no datum on). When you cut your section are selecting all the surfaces. Try picking on the surface you want to cut, you can use the selecting filter to do this.
I am not a V4 operator but this should point you in the right direction.

Hi,

Put your model in a product. Use Section from DMU workbench. The intersection result can be exported in different format files

Saving the section depends on licensing. HD2 or MD2 you can not save the section.

I have since been told about the DMU section tool being the quickest way, then export result as a catpart to be used in a product. I'm using Teamcentre, so I don't want lots of sections/catparts floating around in there as they are temporary until the design surf has firmed up a bit, so I've put each section into a different geometric set within one part - this seems to do the job. I will try again the cutting in sketch plane with datum turned off to see which way is quickest.

trimboy, DMU will be faster to cut the section, but again license dependent on what you can do with it. If your datum is on and you are creating a section in different a CATPart from your surface model, you would end up with a linked copy of the surface data in geometrical set called External References. This would help account for the 10 minutes to cut a section.
