I've been reviewing various papers on the subject of critical state soil mechanics. I think I've found some errors, inconsistencies, or "double usages" of some of the parameters in some of the papers. Of course there is always the possibility that I need to be set right on this too, which is why I ask the following;

1. Is the symbol, lambda, the slope of the critical state line in e-log p' space?

2. Can that same "lambda" be estimated from a 1-D test, using the relationship; lambda=Cc/2.3?

3. Is it just me, or do some folks prefer to work with "e-log p'" space as opposed to "v-ln p'" space? Which is more correct and conventional? Would mixing it up such as "e-ln p'" space really throw things off? I have a feeling my confusion about the nomenclature is the reason I'm having a difficult time with #1 and 2 above.

What is the most concise book on critical state soil mechanics that you can recommend?

Malcolm D. Bolton's "A Guide to Soil Mechanics" ISBN 81 7371 245 8.

My copy is an Indian Edition - pretty good book.
 
Check Critical State Soil Mechanics by Schofield and Wroth and Soil behaviour and Critical State Soil Mechanics by David Muir Wood.

Answers to your questions can be found in the Critical State Soil Mechanics text. The 2.303 is the conversion from
log to base 10 to natural logs.

Interesting topic but can get confusing.
