Cyclone in Batch Operation?

Hi,
I need to separate peel particles form a high flow gas system. It is a known fact that at steady state cyclones are very effective for such separations, but unfortunately in my case the gas discharge occurs for 3 seconds every minute. That is to say there is no flow into the Cyclone for 57 seconds during the cycle which is then followed by a 3 second "flow burst" and the cycle repeats again. Can cyclones handle this sort of separation or will the vortex collapse during the 57 seconds of no flow and therefore during the flow burst no effective separation is obtained as the vortex cannot be instantly re-formed?

Thanks

I'm not sure about a cyclone for transient operation either. Have you considered a baghouse? It should definitely work.

The key to the cyclone application is the suspended particle sizes, the air volume handled during the 3 seconds, and the dP across the cyclone. If you are concerned about separation efficiency during pressure ramp up to full flow due to vortex formation, proper sizing of the cyclone, placing two smaller cyclones in series, or begining air flow into the cyclone with a small fan or compressed air to establish a vortex immediately prior to introduction of dirty air stream should alleviate that concern.

Dear all,

I'm interested with cyclone to separate liqd & solid up to efficiency of 99.9% for less than 10 micron. Is that possible to achieve using cyclone? also could anyone pls suggest where i can get the literature / manufacturer that design a combination of cyclone + coalescor in one single vessel.

Thank you

Aiman
