What exactly is the dead volme of a filter?

You have not exactly defined what sort of filter you are talking about. However in a media filter the dead volume is usually any volume below the filter underdrains. Some filters have no such volume as the underdrains are built into the floor of the filter. Filters that have pipes laid crossways in the gravel that work as underdrains will have at least a small amount of dead volume. Some of the volume of the filter bed is used but there is no downward filtering flow through that portion of bed.

It would generally be only a small percentage of the overall volume.

The type of filter I'm talking about is a bag type filter, with the filtrate outlet built into the floor of the filter housing. Therefore, from your description it sounds like my dead volume is negligible.
