I was going to post this on the Sisters Creek walkway thread, but thought it might be worth it's own discussion.

Does engineering failure only include a design or construction error that directly leads to structural failure, fire, short circuit, or other failure, or does it include designs that contribute to or prevent recovery from catastrophic user errors?

some would say the first BOPV I designed was an engineering failure because they are using them 35 years on at double the pressure and no failures.......

To be honest i am more than happy i am no where near them running at the current pressures and temps...

Or it is like this stone bridge that came out after the storm and flood in the river this autumn and the new road was washed away,
steady and solid :)

A bit of magic engineering maybe?

The people of the village wanted to keep the old stone bridge as it was, the Swedish Transport Administration has said yes :) cheaper for them of course, they did not even know it was under there.

Anna Halliburton had one of BOPs on the bottom in GOM that failed on the Horizon . Which isn't surprising to me as I did it as a 21 year old clueless feck wit as an engineer straight out of uni. I don't see it as a failure because it was FAE'd for half the pressure. Nobody every contacted me about it..... And multiple people that should have known better should have stopped it before it happened. MY sign off had half the pressure they were running end of.

Beautiful stone arch bridge...

dlk there were runs done on all those arches in the Uk in the 90's. Geologist were involved as well in the UK. if you did a von misses plot with the 60% yield the whole thing was blue. Once you had an parametrised input deck you could bang them out nonlinear 5 or 6 per day for 2k each....

I think I need to make a A_H Dictonary LOL
BOP, Blow Out Prewenter
GOM, Golf of Mexico
feck , witless?? yes but now you are old and wise ;-)
FAE, Finite element analysis...
Which reminds me that I have to continue with mine, trying to figure out why the compilation does not work, still one bug I can not find ...

Best Regards A

No, as in "What the feck"...

The University of Sheffield did a lot of work on stone arches... they developed a program called 'Ring'... I was active in that type of analysis decades back. Also did some studies on Historic Brickwork... and have not kept up with it of late...

my god in engineering was a marine ship wright which gives multiple issues. He came through the ship yards as producer as well as a Phd level designer.

A mouthful off him was truly a learning experience. But you only every got it when you had screwed up the third time. The you got it full blast, he educated you the first time they ranforced the second then let rip the third which I never experienced then sacked....

dlk I earned a lot of money doing that bollocks as a research assistant. Linked in with gulf war 1 and being willing and able to run the vibrator I wasn't short of beer. I actually walked away from 2 years worth of salary in the pot but hopefully someone that want to be academic made use of it

I went to a conference in Portsmouth when Sheffield got ripped to shreds with there ideas about that software which was run on beam theory not FEA I seem to remember . Zancavich in the corner was nodding his head but didn't want to get involved do to it not requiring a explicit solver.... But it all made sense to me..... not that made any difference.

I was fortunate to work with the late Arnold Crosier and Paul Krauss, way back when... they didn't lecture me... but sure provided a bunch of life sustaining skills... forever indebted to them.

This one is also nice :) from Carrbridge

My friend took it when we stopped to stock up before we went to Nethy Bridge.

It seems to have many different meanings, depending on whether you are Irish, Scottish or English ;-)

anna you will have screwed the boundary conditions up...... its normal starting out in fea,,,,

err i did the analysis on carrbridge back 20 years ago in my 20's might have the input deck somewhere

Out of curiosity, just found this...

Yes Boss ;-) I might, I have no idea, there isn´t many fault messages and leads, perhaps you can help me unscrew them?
I will return to the hobby thread.

dlk i think I have heard of Paul but not of Arnold.

My Prof was Tommy Grey who definitely had a gift with sorting data. Jim Boyle was the mathematician. I was a pure grunt on the research front, good with my hands and making the gear work but pretty useless as a research engineer.

I could bang the models out and do the experimental work to prove them but never had the brain power to be any use using it. Tommy said to me I was very useful and sent me a lovely email when he found out I was a qualified pilot. But in the grand scope of things I am better flying planes as a failed Phd

I might get a bit of track here, but it was a very strange day in many ways, that day when that photo was taken.
We where going to stay att an B&B in Nethy Bridge ,
When we finally found it, there was a note on the door where it said.
- There is a key under the stone to the left of the door so you can come in.
I'm not home, put the key back if you go out.
[bigsmile]
Then we went to a hotel there for dinner and it was crowded with people, Nethy Bridge is not a big place, and every single one spoke Swedish LOL
It turned out that it was the Swedish national team in orienteering that stayed there, they had also taken a World Cup gold that day, so they celebrated a bit.

really not an issue in Scotland.....

i have been naked swimming in that river so many times from age 2 up to age 41 when i was last there

BTW I have been shagged on the top of that bridge. To be honest is was more like rape of me by a young lassie that is now head of haematology in some health service in the south of England. Rape is a bit of a strong word though. I just wasn't consenting due to being pissed out my tree. But the second and third time while visiting each other while I was at GLA and she was at EDI we were both sober. After that I can't comment..... but we both have kids now and it won't happen again.
