Desalination, low energy high output? 1

Hi - I'm running some initial research into desalination techniques for a high profile, green, high volume project.

large scale renewable energy is the planned source and high outputs are required. Therefore an efficient and low energy technology is required.

So far Reverse Osmosis tops the list. If you agree do you know what the best product/technology is currently available? Otherwise do you know of any other better desalination techs?

I've briefly looked into low pressure distillation (high energy requirements)and forward osmosis (low energy, low output and far from potable).

To respond to your question, additional information is needed on the application. Please provide some information on the water source and the requirements for water recycling.

The water source is sea water, and the output is for human consumption, industrial and agricultural use.

Producing for public water supplies from the sea.

Here is a paper that compares evaporators to RO systems.

Large systems will typically use evaporators.

Acciona Agua out of Spain are building the Adelaide South Australia plant 300ML/day. The SWRO plant recovery is 48.5% using a patent system. Normally recovery is only in the low 40's.

membrane development will ensure longer life and lower energy requirements. Such development is not likely with evaporators.

Acciona Agua also deign and build wind farms to power the SWRO plants.

Without access to waste heat sources to aid the evaporation processes, Reverse Osmosis looks the way forward.

The Acciona Agua systems, which no doubt use Energy Recovery to improve efficiency, are certainly worth talking to.

Always a pleasure looking at the tip of the iceberg for a new market. Clearly I have a lot to learn.
