Design Code for Waste Heat Recovery

Looking at designing a waste heat recovery unit to pre-heat boiler feed water from 100 deg C to 140 at 30 barg, with hot gasses at 245 deg C at 20 mbarg. Gas is on the tube side due to solid contamination. The design is such that the shell will fit into the duct work via the duct flanges welded to the shell. Does PD5500 cater for this design? or should I be looking at a different code?. I also want to avoid expansion bellows on the shell. The tubes are 43 mmOD, Sch 40, shell is 780 mm ID. All material of construction is Carbon Steel.

Draw a sketch of the entire path of the flue gas within some tubes, the liquid surrounding those tubes with their attachment and a portion of the shell.
 
Essentially, what you are concerned with is the proper design of an external economizer. The rules and standards that apply to boiler economizers would apply in your case. If this is your first device of this nature, I suggest that you study similar sucessful designs by others with many years of experience...

Economizers are thermally located within the plant where accelerated corrosion can occur. Your choice of inexpensive, uncoated carbon steel is suspect.

The codes, standards and practices do not care what the source of your heat is... ASME I or VIII have been used as a design code in the past




An important part of your design is the evaluation of the threat of rupture by an economizer that can be isolated and the the selection of relief devices to protect your design

The WHRU design can be involved several Industrial Codes and Standards, such as ASME BPVC I/II/VIII, API-530/560, etc.
May contact the manufacturing Companies and have them help you for the design details and Codes requirement.
 
We are going for the BS EN 12953 as a design code for Shell boilers. The code does not specifically mention baffles on the shell side. As there is requirement to have "breathing space between tubes and shell, there is possibility of water not going across the tubes. Are baffles allowed within the code?
