We are currently designing a 16.4MW hydro electric power plant with gross head of 295m, Qd=7.27cms, pipe dia = 1.3m which involes wier, conveyance line, surge tank, penstock line and power plant. I need some advice and reference/spreadsheet in designing a surge tank especially the height.

Thanks

With a gross head of over 900 feet, do you have a place to position the surge tank for the static head, let alone the runup after the butterfly valves are closed? Runup is likely to be 50 to 100 feet.

I did one about 35 years ago for a local hydroelectric company and, if memory serves me right, we used some design information from the Corps of Engineers.

That was before the age of spreadsheets... [bigsmile]

yup position is based on the static head.. do you still have a copy of the reference. thanks

mr. mike how did you calculate the runup..any basic calculations..thanks

Unfortunately not being 35+ years ago. Best bet is to research COE design material. It does exist. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
