Difference between ASME and ASTM materials

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between ASME and ASTM materials for example if we have ASTM A995 and ASME SA995. I know that SA995 is approved for use in pressure vessels but are there any other differences or are these the same material with a different “stamp” same for A479 and Asme sa479

The front cover of the SA standard will state the differences between the ASME and ASTM spec. The SA spec will state "Identical with ASTM Specification A995 except...." For SA-995 and SA-479 they both state they are identical to the ASTM specification.

When they differ it is usually the ASME requires testing or reporting that is optional under ASTM. Though you do have to watch rev levels, the SA is often 5-8 years behind ASTM. There are many cases of alloys being listed in an ASTM spec that won't appear in the code for a long time.

Be careful of the year of the ASTM Specification as Ed said. To use ASTM material, it must be acceptable to ASME. See ASME Section IIA Mandatory Appendix II for what years are acceptable. For example, if you purchase ASTM material that is newly wrought it may be certified to the 2019 or 2020 edition of the ASTM specification. Specifications to either of these years would not have been reviewed by the ASME Code committees for approval and inclusion in the 2019 ASME Code.
