I am designing an 1 storey (approx 20ft floor to roof) addition to a 1 story building with new CMU adjacent to existing CMU. Firewall required. The addition needs to be completely separate structurally for several reasons which I won’t discuss. Firewall required FRR is 4hrs total with each wall providing 2hrs.
NBCC 2020 code references:
3.1.10.1 says double walls don’t need to meet the collapse prevention detailing. However, 4.1.5.17 still says that if the roof/floor FRR doesn’t meet same FRR as firewall that the firewall is laterally unsupported (I.e needs to cantilever) with .5kPa.
Am I interpreting this correctly? I have checked several threads, code commentary, code interpretations, etc, and have not seen this discussed.
