Double Temper

What are the advantages/disadvantages of double temper in a ,say, a large chain sprocket of 4140? Would they also apply to 4340?

Little or no advantage to double tempering those two steels. Double tempering is mainly used to reduce retained austenite in carburized grades. But some alloys such as 300M ,H-11 and many tool steels benefit from a double temper, or in the case of H-11, a triple temper.

I agree with swall. I don't see any advantage of double tempering 4130 or 4340 steels.

For those alloys, typically double tempering does not offer much advantage. One potential advantage might be if the application would expose the chain to elevated temperatures. Double tempering will aid in improving stability, but again not common for the 4XXX series alloys.
