Hi all,

In case we need to support a concrete slab (patio) and considered it to be a structural slab. Should the dowel bars be at the top of slab and then into the foundation wall or the dowel at the bottom of slab then into the foundation wall. Attached an image of it, there is no bearing available to rest the slab on top of the wall. so dowel is the structural element that is going to connect the slab into the wall and its going to bear the weight of the slab and transfer it into the foundation wall. Appreciate if anybody could help me understand this!
Thank you

My idea to push forward was to have that new upstand wall 4' deep below the slab & rest the new slab to the new upstand wall and tie the slab into existing foundation wall

4" should be enough, depending on the span and strength of the existing wall. Just need to check bearing stress if you think it might be questionable.

Surcharge is only for slab on grade - if you're designing as a structural slab supported by the existing wall, you need to check the existing wall for the new axial load and resulting moment.

You said you don't want to deal with form work for a key, but your idea looks like a form work nightmare.
