On the duct arrangement drawings when we write the duct dimensions is it width x height or height x width..

on plans :
on sections view:

I think first mistake is, you are using the wrong software. Use REvit and the duct tag automatically does it in the industry -standard.

I don't use Revit. Is changing W X H plant to H X W in section view is industry standard? I have seen the the drawings made manually in my office (and searched the drawings made in last 25 years) W x H always remain W X H irrespective of section of plan view. But Revit do it differently. Just wondering if any industry standard really exist?

Review a few of mechanical drawing books from your library for a clue.

The first number you see is always the duct dimension you see on the drawing and the second number is the duct dimension into the paper. Sounds confusing.

If a 12x6 duct is drawn on plan, then the width is 12 (the duct size "seen"), and the height (not seen) is 6" deep into the page. That same duct in section, you would "see" the 6" duct and the 12" would be assumed, so that duct would be called 6x12.

I agree with cdxx139. That is the way we have always done it.
Years ago I was told that is how sheep metal shops do it.

Yes. The first number is always the side of the duct that you are actually looking at in the drawing.
