Dear experts

In my project , equipment nozzle of 22mm thickness with stud connection ( field weld) delivered to site with U stamp .Contractor carried out welding with piping as per project ITP and want to claim the first circumfertial joint belongs to piping code .

1. As per U-1 (e)(1) (a) the joint belongs to equipment code ASME DIV VIII . If it belongs to equipment code field welding activities , data reports , AI involvement all will be required. Is it right ?
2. In MDR , attachment details specified about nozzle details and in flange mentioned as N.A ,and no where mentioned about field welding. Shall this statement can be taken as joint belongs to piping code ?

For your valuable advises .

Thanks
Abraham

" equipment nozzle of 22mm thickness with stud connection ( field weld)"
How can it be a field weld if it is connected by studs ?

Hi

Equipment welded to nozzle and nozzle left open for field welding with piping .

Thanks

The contractor is correct.
ASME VIII Div 1 states the welding end connection must be included in the vessels scope - not the actual weld joint.

B31.3
300.1.1 Content and Coverage
(c) See Figure 300.1.1 for a diagram illustrating the
application of B31.3 piping at equipment. The joint connecting
piping to equipment is within the scope of B31.3.

DekDee

Yes agreed belongs to piping code . Thanks .

Abraham

Yes, it may be the piping work.
But, the first circumferential weld joint of the vessel nozzle is the Code Work which requires the Code Welder and AI inspection. Should confirm with your AI for the work acceptance.

mk3223....not sure what you saying....but sounds like you are contradicting DekDee's correct response. Vessel ends at the weld prep of the nozzle...otherwise called a Weld End....denoted "WE" on a MDR. No AI required for the weld....unless jurisdiction mandates.
