Hi all,

I am having issues with a hydrostatic analysis I am conducting using ANSYS Structural. My geometry consists of several parts which are all constructed out of surfaces. These surfaces are then interconnected using a variety of mesh connections and contact regions. However when trying to perform the analysis I am receiving many error messages of the following nature:

"The normal of target element 9445 is not consistent with the normal of target element 9717 in real set 108."

All my geometry seem fairly sound so I am unsure as to what I am doing wrong. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, does anyone know how I can locate a particular element within my geometry (eg. element 9445 from the above error message)? If I knew where the errors were located I may be able to diagnosis the problem!

Many thanks in advance,

Ian

Hello,

the reason for that is note all surfaces that form a contact surface have consistent normal direction.

There is an option in Ansys Mechanical APDL to show only surfaces with normals facing your point of view (try Plot Controls...)

After you identify the wrong surfaces you have to reverse their normals prior to meshing.

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks very much for the advice. I am relatively new to ANSYS so I am currently going through a steep learning curve!

Cheers,

Hi Ian,

Have you checked the (target and contact) element's normal orientation ?
find ESYS command in ANSYS help, (plot control->symbol->esys).
As for element error message, you can get align your workplane to the nodes attached to that element.
In the other words, the location of your error element is the location of the Workingplane .
Hope this helps.
