Hi everyone,

Hope all is well.

I’m not sure if this is the right area to ask this question - apologies if not, but any help would be massively appreciated.

I was hoping you could give me some advice about which anchor bolts to call off to hold down a cylindrical exhaust stack that is unlined (and hot as a result > 500oC) and made from 321 stainless steel.

As a company, we usually call off ASTM F1554 Grade 36 for the holding down hardware for the exhaust base – but obviously this is a carbon steel bolt and I’m not sure if we are able to use this with a 321 stainless steel stack which is unlined - the base rings the bolts pass through will be hot (approx. 400-500 degree C).

Are you able to recommend any Anchor Bolt Hardware to use when the stack and base rings are 321 stainless steel and would be at an elevated temperature? Possibly ASTM F1554 Grade 55 or ASTM F1554 Grade 105 would be more suitable?

I can’t find any technical data regarding yield stress at elevated temperature for these or for ASTM F1554 Gr36 / 55 / 105. Do you have access to any technical literature / data sheets which may contain this information. I’m struggling to justify any choice I make.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Craig

I would not use carbon steel because of the exposure temperature at 500 deg C is too high for this material in terms of strength and degradation. Instead, use 304 stainless steel anchor bolts to better match the thermal expansion, and creep strength with the stack material.

Anchor bolt, like into concrete?
Indoors or outdoors ?

@metengr - thank you for the tip. I have done some more research around the site you recommended and F1554 Grade 105 is a 4140 material that is heat treated and is very similar to A193 Grade B7. Potentially, F554 Grade 105 could be a choice, but A193 Grade B7 would probably be better to specify. I’ve called off A193 Grade B7 for pipework flanges but never for anchor bolts for a stack, but I guess a stack is just a big pipe!

@Tmoose - Yes, it is an anchor bolt into a concrete foundation outdoors.

If you go the route of ASTM A 193, you need Grade B16 not B7 for exposure to elevated temperature.
