I am detailing a large mass concrete earth retaining wall that is several hundred feet long. A reviewer advised to implement expansion joints approximately every 100 feet to allow for thermal growth/contraction of the concrete walls. Most expansion joint details I have seen appear to be applicable to slabs on grade or walls of some nominal thickness and perhaps not appropriate for a wall that may be 20 feet wide at its base. I cant imagine using that much expansion joint filler material at each cross-section. Does anyone have a good reference? I have seen very old drawings where they either specify creosoted cypress boards to be anchored between concrete sections and left in place as well as sections where only the outter 8 inches of the concrete section is adjoined with the expansion joint material between them then a construction joint boyond. Any help is appreciated.
