Are those fields of VW diesels surrounding the stadium?

"I thought those systems did a low-voltage check of the entire wire-out to ensure this sort of thing didn't happen..."

Actually no, nowadays they don't use electrical detonators. At least not for big jobs like this. They use detonating cord.

But isn't det cord set off electrically, I mean they don't light a match and run, right?

STALguy is correct here. You can see the smoke from the detonating cord in the video.

No. The parking lot is in use as overflow production storage for a nearby plant.

Interestingly, at least 60 of the VW diesels stored AT THE SILVERDOME were stolen and given new titles and sold at auctions, according to news reports, so I guess that confirms my theory.

This article from Sept 29, 2017 says there are almost 9,000 VW diesels parked at the Pontiac Silverdome.

The almost 9,000 Volkswagen diesel vehicles parked at the Pontiac Silverdome could remain there for some time.
VW is still trying to determine its strategy for dealing with the cars bought back from customers as part of the resolution to its massive diesel cheating scandal, in part because the company does not want to adversely affect the market for its used cars.
