hi all,
i am new user to solidedge and want to do FEA in solidedge.
i tried to create a model and started the femap express,
an error msg appeared as
" NASTRAN was unable to solve the model as it was defined by Femap Express.
you might try changing the part geometry or mesh size or consider using Femap for this analysis."

i tried with changing the geometry or modifiying mesh size but the same msg appered.

iam using solidedge V19 classic edition.

Please suggest me the procedure/method for doing FEA in solid edge.

Thanks in advance!!!

The version of FEMAP express that comes free with SE seems fairly limited. I've had to significantly simplify geometry before to get it to work.

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of faq731-376 recently, or taken a look at posting policies: What is Engineering anyway: faq1088-1484

Dear Srirou,
Yes, Femap Express is a toy, if your time cost money better move to FEMAP professional and you will save money and get accurate & professional results.

Well, the reason of the error could be many, surely the element size used is too coarse, then the model mesh is highly distorted and nx nastran solver refuse to solve. If you look in your system for the file with extension *.F06 you will read exactly the reason of the fatal error, search for *.F06 in your PC.

Then, you will have to simplify your CAD model, suppress small features (steps, rounds, small holes, etc..) and then the mesh quality will be acceptable and the nx nastran solver will run with success !!.

Best regards,
Blas.

Chances are you hit the Nastran date problem.

Unfortunately, the .F06 file is deleted after Femap Express runs. Blas, do you have a way of keeping it around? I think its written to %temp%/FemapExpress.

BTW, Solid Edge Simulation coming ST2 shouldn't have any of these problems. It even has a viewer for the FO6 file.

Dear Mark,
In fact, surely the problem here is due to the 1st April date check error, I have ran Femap Express on Solid Edge ST and received a similar message. Investigating I note that ST comes with NX nastran v5.0 (!?, so old!!), and if I look for the *.F06 file in my system I see Femap Express writes everything at %TEMP%\SolidEdgeCAE, where you can find the following files:

14/09/2009 19:40 1,427,590 SolidEdgeCAE.dat
14/09/2009 19:40 0 solidedgecae.f04
14/09/2009 19:40 0 solidedgecae.f06
14/09/2009 19:40 2,924 solidedgecae.log
14/09/2009 19:40 320 SolidEdgeCAE.result
14/09/2009 19:40 37,221 SolidEdgeCAE.x_t

If you open the "solidedgecae.log" file with NotePad at the end of the file you will see the following error message:

19:40:36 NSINIT: *** NSINIT ERROR 70 *** UNABLE TO OPEN UNIT 8
19:40:36 NSINIT: STOP
19:40:36 Analysis complete 3

This is the famous Date Check error of April 1st, 2009.
REMEDY for ST (Similar for SE V19 & 20):
Siemens PLM has resolved the problem with a software patch that changes a binary integer value and in effect changes the date check algorithm to allow the program initialization to proceed.

Patch can be downloaded from
To install the patch:
- Download and unzip the SESTFemapExpressPatch.zip file to a local folder.
- Place the analysis.exe file in the [installdir]\Solid Edge ST\FEMAP Express\nastran\nxn5p0m1\i386 folder to replace the original Analysis.exe.

Best regards,
Blas.
