Used to be in SW2006, that when you edited a part by itself (ie not within an assembly) that a Cut-Extrude would appear as such in the feature tree - the new feature would automatically be named Cut-Extrude.

Now it appears as just an Extrude...

But if you edit a part within an assembly, it shows up like it used to - as a Cut-Extrude.

That's because, in a part, the Instant 3D function allows an Extrude to be turned into a Cut-extrude and vice versa.

In an assy only cut-extrudes are possible.

This is why I only upgrade once in a blue f'ing moon...

I tire of having to debug stuff like this. And pay them for the privilage.

But now I can edit my part on a conference room table - whoopdie dooo....

I came across this on a totally different system with a client file... wondered why extrudes and cuts were all named "Extrude" - thought it strange that the guy did that, figuring he manually changed them... not the case.

But even with instant 3d off, it still does this...

anyway to change that behavior?

I noticed that Cut Extrudes done in the assembly will only maintain a cut when edited as an opened part...

Kinda inconsistant ... I've been using solidworks since 96 and they constantly amaze me at changes to the programs behavior like this.

The default names of features is a non-issue for me; I usually rename most features to something more recognizable {O-ring Groove, Bearing Recess, etc).

Even if you don't upgrade yearly, you should read the "What's New" guides for each year. Then at least you will get to see what features and functions are available, and when you do upgrade, the "debugging" is minimised.

Every versions "What's New" guide can be downloaded from

I agree with CBL 100%! In every place I have been "naming features upon creation" has been the highest ranking good practice to establish. NOBODY ever goes back and renames the features as they should. In a corporate environment you are doing this to make your files easier to understand by another user; on a personal level you should do the same to benefit yourself!

CBL gets another star from me!

Updraft, I agree with that (and CBL's comments).

I don't know if you meant to say this as well, but to encourage this "Naming" and make it as simple as possible, Go to Tools > Options > System Options > Feature Manager and tick the "Name feature on creation" checkbox, so that the cursor automatically goes to the default name and highlights it ready for editing as soon as you complete the feature.

I do about 130 to 150 designs a year... lots of simple parts... most of my clients have been in biz for well over 20 year. I had to fight to get them to even let me do 3D anything.

Their schedules are so tight, even major contract manufacturers won't bid the final assembly jobs.

I think they should atleast have a simple setting that allows one to shut off that feature instead of dictating how someone should work. Especially users using their product for over 10 years.

And I realize it's nice to have the Instant 3D thing, but one thing that struck me about SolidEdge's new campaign "can anyone do 3D? - Now they can!!" is that's great ...someone can model it... but can some poor sap actually build it? Can you tool it? Does follow DFM criteria?

Hmmmm...

ajawamnet ... In what way do you use the extrude and extrude-cut features when you work with a model?

Instant 3D is a neat concept, but I don't use it because it was too problematic. Many Solid Edge users aren't using the Synchronous Technology mode either.
