I'm looking for a self tapping fastener with a flat head that can be used for 1/8" thick material. I also need design load capacities for the screws. Can anyone suggest a supplier and fastener? Size to be #10 or larger and load is less than 500 or 600 lbs. It's in a non-corrosive environment. Thanks...

DIN 7500 M6 should be suitable. You can get them in dome head or countersunk.

Also 12G 500 Series Tek screws are also suitable.

My previous research has indicated they have around 6-8kN of tensile capacity which easily fits you requirements.

Dik:

Take a look at these ITW fasteners. Flat pancake head - not true flathead though.

I'd come across these... I was looking for a flat head to use with countersunk hole.'

Thanks....

I like them for their variety. I don't see loading info, though. I expect it depends mostly on the material it's threaded into.

Look at the ITW Reamer Tek screws, They're flat head screws designed for wood to metal, but I don't see why they wouldn't work for steel. Shank hole and countersink would need to be drilled in the outer plate. We've used them for fastening to HSS - work great.

Thanks... do they have a load capacity?

Can you list a supplier?

I cannot find these on the Teks website.

Thanks....

Regarding the "Tek" screws this is the variety I'm referring to:

Philips head (AUS supplier)
Square Countersunk
Philips (US Supplier)

The fine thread gives them "decent pullout" capacity in 3mm sheet. But do your own research. My research indicated 6-9kN.

For the DIN product? Plenty of suppliers in Europe. I'm not sure of suppliers in your locality.

I'd be worried about the phillips head stripping out. May be ok in 1/8" material though. I have run some Tek5's into 3/8" steel and once they start tapping, it put a hurting on my drill.

I definitely agree with that. I've used Philips in steel up to about 4mm thick but it is unideal. A flush female square, hex head or a male hex head (not flush) is far easier to use effectively without worrying about stripping.

Actually, I now remember thatI I have used those ITW Reamer screws (phillips head) in 1/4" HSS and they worked fine.
So a phillips head may be OK.

Thanks... I'll see what I can find.

What's it supporting and how is the screw loaded? Shear? Tension?

Mostly in shear and a little tension. Load is of the magnitude of about 500 lbs. Material is about 1/8" thick. I can use 2 screws for this load.

Heavy gauge teks will carry it, but like all small fasteners are inherently less robust and corrode more quickly than bigger fasteners. It doesn’t take much for a threads to rust out.

We deal with facade problems from time to time, bits and pieces falling or buildings, where the rivets and self tappers have failed.

It depends a lot on the corrosivity of the environment.

Check out Simpson TBP Strong Drive Screws or TF Screws
Download C-F-2023TECHSUP.pdf from Simpson's website.
p. 212 for TBP screws.

Thanks, gentlemen... I've got lots to work on. I'll post when I finalise.
