Field Welded Single-Angle Connection at Embed Plate

Hello,

I am looking at designing a field welded single-angle connection for a lightweight wide flange to an embed plate, where I understand the recommended design is to weld only the toe and the bottom of the angle as an eccentrically loaded weld group allowing a pinned connection. Correspondingly, I understand welding the heel and the top of the clip angle is off limits. In Blodgett's book, he cautions that the "welding the heel would make it rigid and prevent it from moving under load," which I can live with, but it results in a "maximum force on the weld of about 4 times that of the double angle connection". in this case, the double angle or flexible seat connection is not available, so the single angle and welds will have to do much more work. I appreciate any insight into designing this connection? Thank you,

Somewhat oddly, Canada does this connection the way that you've described it, even in spite of the rotational ductility concerns. In a lot of ways, it collapses down to just a lone shear tab with a single sided weld. We have tabulated values for this in our steel handbook. If you share you loads and enough of your geometry that I can make a sensible choice, I can send you a scan of the relevant bits.

KootK, much appreciated. I have 8.7 kips and a L6x4x3/8x0'-8" clip angle connecting a W12x35 to an embed plate. Will be interested to see your tables.

KootK, for some reason the file doesn't appear accessible or able to be opened. It says CISC_Table Lipson.pdf but nothing show's up or the file does not download like usual. Thank you again sir!

Got it, thanks again for sharing! I'll put to use.
