I am having a very odd problem with my NX 7.5 install. When I choose File -> New, either from the menu or from the icon, the session hangs immediately and I need to use Task Manager to force quit. I also have NX 8.0.1 installed on this workstation and have absolutely no trouble with the same function there. I have reinstalled NX 7.5 and rolled back any Windows, IE, and .NET updates that have occured in the past few weeks. Nothing has helped. I can choose a template from the templates pallette, Save As, and then work from there to begin a new model so nothing wrong with the templates. It is limited to the File -> New command. The log file shows a sort of loop that happens where it is looking for template files but it doesn't seem to find them. The only recent change that has not been rolled back yet is the 8.0.1 update. Has anyone else seen this? I have contacted GTAC about this and they were not able to find a solution.

The following just loops over and over at the end of the log file:

Are you running IE9. There are some known issues and the recommendation is to use IE8.

I just installed the latest patch for NX8 and have IE9 installed.
File-New would crash me out of NX.
Went back to previous version of NX and have no issues.

Try this:

Using regedit (the registry editor), delete the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Unigraphics Solutions\NX\7.5

It might work.

Anthony,
That was one of the things that GTAC had me try. It didn't help.

Jurgen,
I am not running IE9 but it must be something like this. When I hit File=>New I see all of the icons on my primary monitor flash and then NX locks up. It must be some kind of conflict with IE or Windows but I can't find the problem. I have uninstalled all of the updates that are dated after 12/15/2011, including IE updates. My NX 8.0.1 install works fine. No problem at all.

Can you try logging in as a different user and then trying it?
My guess is that it might be a profile problem if it works for a different username.
I would try deleting the folder that NX stores all the user preferences (on my system it's: C:\Users\AnthonyG\AppData\Local\Unigraphics Solutions\NX75).
Check your log file for the location on your system and delete the contents (after backing them up).

Anthony,
That was the next thing that GTAC had me try. They know all of your tricks! I just noticed another odd thing about this. I can create a new component from the assemblies toolbar and that dialogue works just fine. It is almost the same dialogue as File=>New so I wonder what the difference could be?

Well I am the equivalent of GTAC in Aus & NZ so we have to have some tricks the same ;-).
OK how about this, copy the UGII\templates\ugs_model_templates.pax from NX8 over the same file for NX7.5.
Also can you post your NX log file? I can give you a secure link if you like so you don't have to post it here.

Just tried overwriting the .pax file and that didn't help. If you would send me a secure link for the log file I can send that along.
For clarification: I did not try logging out and running under a different name because I don't have a different user ID that will work on this machine. I can look into that next week. I have tried deleting the Unigraphics Solutions folder and that did not help.

Log files for an NX7.5 session and NX 8.0 session sent. Comparing the two it looks like the NX8.0 goes through the same search paths that NX7.5 does but at some point the command to launch the menu occurs while in NX7.5 it never gets to that point. There is no error, it just stops.

Tried having a colleague log in under their user name and they were able to successfully launch NX8.0 but not NX7.5. We got an odd error that NX7.5 was not able to locate the main_menu.men file in the expected directory. Perhaps this had something to do with admin rights because I was not able to open any of the NX folders to search for the file under his priveleges but I can with mine. Again though, NX8.0 worked fine, NX7.5 not so much.

This is very strange. NX7.5 has been rock solid stable for me forever. I have never had any trouble before and I use it constantly.

I've had a look at the logs and there's nothing there that I can see that suggests an error.
You're using Windows XP so that rules out UAC being an issue.
Do you have another workstation with NX7.5 that works? I was going to suggest deleting the NX install and copying the whole structure form the working system.

All I can suggest otherwise is a format & reinstall of the system as you've already tried a reinstall of NX.

Thanks for taking the time to work through this with me Anthony. Perhaps I can turn this into a good opportunity to get Win7-64 installed on this workstation and make the leap into the modern era.

We do have many other workstations with NX7.5 installed that have no problems.

I don't see your log file listed anywhere, but does it suggest (somewhere near the top of the syslog) that it has found a user.dpv? could NX7 be trying to use an NX8 customer default setting perhaps? ... (just a thought)

@NXherbie, no I checked that and it's only using the NX7.5 one. There are USER,GROUP or SITE dirs either.
