Fire destroys one of the two largest wood structures in the world... 3

Is this the use of the facility by model airplane enthusiasts? How would that help other than being used, it might be subject to upkeep?

On October 19, 2013, the AMA Executive Council recognized the “North Hangar” Building #28, at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Tustin, California, as a historic site under the AMA’s National Aeromodeling Heritage Program.

The north hangar, near Valencia Avenue and Armstrong Road, caught fire just before 1 a.m. Flames chewed through the historic building throughout the day, collapsing section after section. What remains of the structure will eventually be demolished, fire officials said.

Thanks 3DD...

I was leaving the Costco near there this afternoon around 4pm and the rest of the hangar was on fire; seemed like a new blaze, since it was black smoke when we first saw it and turned whiter after a few minutes.

{edit] Apparently, it's been burning off and on all this time.

Reminds me that some are proposing skyscrapers made of "engineered wood" while other are also proposing we reject cars and switch to e-bikes, whose batteries are occasionally bursting into flames that cannot be put out. Perhaps a useful piece of furniture in such a sky scraper is a hammer ( to break the window) and a parachute.

Green or not, I like concrete and/or masonry highrises... I can see something like Grenfell towers happening. All it might take is an eBike... The last I heard is that they were up to about 25 stories.

Seeing as how the authorities wanted to develop the site but blocked, the destruction by fire was very unfortunate by convenient.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

A blaze caused by friction, no doubt :)

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

An update on the fire that destroyed most of the blimp hanger at the old Marine Air Station in Tustin, CA. It seems that four days after the fire was supposed to have been out, the rest of the building suddenly caught fire again and that just about took down what was left, except for the structures which supported the doors as well as the doors themselves, although it looks like they could collapse at any moment.

Here are some photos that I took earlier today (compare them to the ones I posted last week):

It appears that they've already started to process the area as you can see more activity near the site:

Also, it appears that the authorities have blocked off all the streets close to the building, similar to what was done on that first day, when the fire was still burning. Now when I took that second set of pictures, the day after the fire was out, they had removed all the road blocks and they were letting people get as close as the fences around the site would allow, where in some places you could get within a couple hundred feet of the building. Not any more, I had to drive around the barriers but no one noticed and so I was able to get the photos that I did.

Also, it appears that they've placed what looks like 'sniffers' all around the area, instruments to monitor the air quality, or at least I assume that that's what these devices are. I saw at least five of them (photos of a couple of them are shown below):

IDK about the municipal processes there but here (Australia) there is always a cry to preserve interesting old stuff as-is but much suspicion of any ideas that would give them a new commercial lease of life. So they get neglected and something like this happens...

It appears that they've taken down the large steel doors. All that's left at the site are the side structures which were part of the front and back ends of the building, which held up the steel doors.

The comment about the city wanting to use the land reminds me of an old joke.
The short version:
Three recently retired middle aged guys sitting on the beach in the Carribean.
All of them had had businesses that being squeezed by imports and technology.
They had all had disasters and retired on the insurance payout.
One suffered a fire, another had water system fail and flood the place.
The third one said that he was hit with a hurricane ...
And the first two exclaim, "how do you cause a hurricane?"
