We have been trying to determine the minimum number of bolts required for the lid of a vessel. We know the minimum linear load to reach optimum compression of the seal. Is there a handbook, standard or equation(s) that can be used to determine this?
You have an interesting challenge before you. The best "quick" source that I know of to begin getting an answer to your problem is the "IPT Industrial Fastener Handbook" by Bruce Basaraba. It can be ordered off the internet at
Look at the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII-1, Unfired Pressure Vessels, Appendix 2, for the design of flanges. Included in the design procedure is a method for determining the required number of bolts.
