Flange Design - Number of bolts needed

We have been trying to determine the minimum number of bolts required for the lid of a vessel. We know the minimum linear load to reach optimum compression of the seal. Is there a handbook, standard or equation(s) that can be used to determine this?

It has a complete chapter (pages 187-240) on gasketed joints and multiple bolted gasketed joints.

The number of bolts is dependant upon the shape of the lid, the psi load and the size bolt you can use.

Look at the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII-1, Unfired Pressure Vessels, Appendix 2, for the design of flanges. Included in the design procedure is a method for determining the required number of bolts.
