Hi,

I'm building a recreational flight simulator. I'm no professional engineer and need some help with designing a base. Maybe one day, I'll put the simulator onto a 6dof motion platform so I would like to design the base with that in mind. How would you go about talking this task? How do I make a rigid structure that won't twist? I think 6dof platforms generally comw with quite a large rigid structure as it is, so perhaps I'm over thinking the problem and the top of the 6dof platform structure will be large enough in footprint whereby no matter how the platform is designed, it won't twist, but I just wanted to run this past vastly more experienced people.

A structure designed to L/400 will resonate around 4 Hz, which will interfere with the eventual motion simulation, specifically flutter, which can go as high as ~7 Hz.

... But you probably don't need to solve that problem now. You don't need two stiff structures fighting each other. For now, you want reasonable stiffness and/or damping, at least so that simulated sound won't excite your structure.

You probably should consider the interface shape of whatever motion base you intend to use someday, and build your base to complement that, and bring wiring and A/C ducting to about the right places.

design the base with the actuators in mind.

how big to make the actuators ? how heavy is your sim and how fast do you want it to move ?

design your base so it's easy to reinforce, since maybe you can't answer the previous questions.

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

Rockstarroyals: start a new thread rather than hijacking one. P.S. you can't: all structures will twist. In your new thread quantify how much twist you can tolerate and what is trying to twist what structure.
